About Widgit Symbols

Widgit Symbols are simple, visual images, which each represent a single word or concept, used to support understanding and communication.

Widgit Symbols provide very effective visual support for anyone who may struggle to understand written information - such as non-readers, anyone who is learning new vocabulary, people with learning or communication challenges and people with English as an Additional Language (EAL).

The ever-expanding Widgit Symbol Set contains over 11,000 symbols, which are available in both colour and black & white.

Widgit Symbols follow a 'schematic structure', which means there are consistent rules for how each symbol is formed. These simple rules are quickly recognisable for symbol users, which enables them to understand the meaning of any new symbols they come across more independently.

Communicate: SymWriter

Communicate: SymWriter enables people who may struggle with reading and writing to participate in the writing process by putting together their own pieces of written work onscreen, with the support of Widgit Symbols.

Support staff can create writing frames and word banks, which learners can use for further support. The interface of SymWriter can also be personalised for different learners to suit individual learning needs.

SymWriter's many features, such as speech support and a visual spellchecker, offer learners reassurance when choosing a word, helping increase motivation. It is also switch-accessible!

SymWriter comes with a range of templates and tutorials which help support staff to get started with the program and to learn how to get the most from it.
