ICE Sharing Day 2011

Following feedback from last years event, the highlight of the day was a training session on intensive interaction. This was delivered by Dave Hewett Associates who are nationally renowned for their ground breaking work enabling communication with people with profound and multiple learning disabilities.

During the day the audience were transported to the beach, with the sounds, smells, feel and tastes of a trip out on the seaside with a sensory story. Everyone got ice cream on the 'trip' and one day tripper got soaking wet, even though it wasn't part of the journey!!!

Couldn't make the Sharing Day? Thinking of coming next year? You were there and just want to relive the day? Then click on the link below to see a short video of the day's events.

There was even more learning on the day, Sarah and Jenny from Anglian Community Enterprise showed how to use objects of reference to enable communication and choice with those with more complex needs.SD003

Communication specialists and providers were on hand to demonstrate the latest in high and low tech communication aids and software.

Leroy

It wasn't just Essex we heard about, Leroy Binns, who is a national campaigns assistant from MENCAP told us about their Getting to Know You Project whereby people with a learning disability advocate for those with profound and multiple learning disabilities.

Crafty Drama also treated the audience to their signed and sung version of the upcoming Royal Wedding

The day was closed by Susan Carragher, Director of Libraries and Culture who said she was "very impressed with all the work that had been displayed today".

  1. As a group I felt we grew and took away some wonderful practical ideas. These will be used in multiple aspects of our work and lives . The beach exercise/story rocked!, I found it particularly motivating and refreshing , this was echoed at a recent meeting with the ommunication leads for Essex Cares (post sharing day ). Also made some good contacts for networking. Looking forward to next year . Neil A-R Essex Cares project co-ordinator
