Success at The 2011 Jodi Awards

Double commendation for Inclusive Communication Essex at the 2011 Jodi Awards

The Winners of the UK Jodi Awards 2011 for accessible digital culture were announced on December 1st at the National Waterfront Museum, Swansea. The Jodi awards are given to museums, libraries and archives for the best use of digital technology to widen access for disabled people.

Inclusive Communication Essex (ICE) received commendations for Digital Access Onsite and Digital Access for People with a Learning Disability for this website.

David Anderson, Director General of the National Museums of Wales, presenting the first commendation said "This pioneering project continues to impress, in particular the new resources developed with young people. The progress it has made in the community to promote communication is exemplary.  ICE is the only project ever to have been commended three times by the Jodi Awards".
He added "ICE makes inclusive communication flourish at a time that services for people from the learning disabled community are under threat."

Jonathan Rix, son of Lord Rix and Trustee of the Rix Centre on presenting the second commendation stated "Inclusive Communication Essex is like 'a library without walls'. It's a vast reservoir of online resources which takes the library out into the community" and that "ICE is a monumental effort and it owes much to the relentless commitment of those involved"

Marcus Weisen, Director of the Jodi Mattes Trust concluded "By taking the communication needs of people with learning disabilities into account, it helps them to understand and be understood and become fully involved in their life plans. This visionary yet highly practical service is part of a county-wide strategy for inclusive communications to ensure anyone in Essex can communicate with people with learning disabilities.

It is a shining example of libraries at their best, working across a range of local partnerships - social services, health, leisure and voluntary agencies. It adds value and enables new services to develop their potential."
